Nurturing Sustainability and Community Growth in Kampong Cham Since 2018
Providing eco-friendly hospitality and supporting Kampong Cham since 2018
Our resort has been growing since October 13, 2018, with the purpose of tourism and community development in Cambodia by providing people with career opportunities and knowledge of the tourism industry. Hanchey Bamboo Resort is part of the Buddhism for Social Development Action (BSDA) NGO. It is also a training center for disadvantaged students who graduated with a major in hospitality from the Smile Institute of BSDA. We provide these students with accommodation, food, and skills.

Our Past
Conceived by Buddhism for Social Development Action (BSDA), Hanchey Bamboo Resort was planned from 2016 and opened its bamboo-framed doors in October 2018. From the outset, local artisans and BSDA trainees worked side by side to raise solar-powered structures and launch what would become Cambodia’s pioneering social-enterprise eco-resort.
-
Our Present
Today, our riverside retreat comprises four accommodation types—Garden Bungalows, River-View Suites, Family Rooms with Terrace and Superior Twin Rooms—alongside the Lotus Hall meeting venue, open-air Lotus Shala yoga pavilion, Bamboo Restaurant and central pool. Every space is built from locally sourced bamboo, powered by solar energy, operated plastic-free and staffed by BSDA trainees, while guests enjoy Khmer cuisine, cultural excursions and wellness activities.
-
Our Future
Looking ahead, we will deepen our community impact by expanding hands-on vocational training, enhancing sustainable operations and introducing new cultural and wellness programmes. Each new initiative will further our mission to uplift local youth, preserve Khmer heritage and nurture responsible tourism in Phnom Hanchey.
Empowering Youth Together with BSDA & the Smile Institute
From day one, Hanchey Bamboo Resort has operated as the flagship social-enterprise of Buddhism for Social Development Action (BSDA). Every bamboo beam we raise and every guest we welcome directly supports BSDA’s mission to equip disadvantaged young people with real-world hospitality skills. Under BSDA’s 18-month vocational programme, trainees master everything from front-of-house service to event coordination, gaining confidence, professionalism and the chance to build a brighter future.
Complementing this, Smile Institute provides a nurturing residential environment where students live, learn and grow together. Here they catch up on core education, study English, morality and life skills, then transition seamlessly into on-the-job internships at our resort. By integrating classroom lessons with hands-on training—whether in our Bamboo Restaurant, Lotus Hall or gardens—our partnership ensures each young person emerges equipped to thrive in Cambodia’s hospitality and tourism industry.
